Abstract:
A current trend in the development and implementation of industrial applications is to use wireless networks to communicate with the distributed system nodes, mainly to increase application flexibility, reliability and portability, as well as to reduce the implementation cost. Wireless Sensor Networks WSN is a promising solution in this field. In the latest test-bed, there is a trend that ZigBee technology could be used as wireless network technology to realize a distributed intelligent system. So a novel architecture of distributed intelligent control systems using Wireless ZigBee Networks is deployed by providing a framework for highly distributed intelligent wireless control network based on ZigBee technology. The system consists of intelligent nodes with distributed algorithm that can be implemented based on common 8-bit MCV microcontrollers with a wireless means of communication. With the rapid development of the field of industrial process control and the fast popularization of ZigBee technology, commercial wireless radio modules can form a flexible distributed intelligent system that has a cost-effective developing platform allowing easy customization. This thesis presents the design and implementation of a web based Distributed Control System DCS built on the wireless communication protocols IEEE 802.15.4, ZigBee and Digimesh. The development of decentralized distributed input-output systems used for the process control, data acquisition and monitoring can be realized by dividing the overall plant process into many subsystems or small processes , each carries only the code necessary for the specific set of activities performed by the subsystems. This can be contrasted to a centralized control system that requires complex programming to govern the entire system. The monitoring and process control unit for each subsystem is geographically distributed in the controlled plant. This thesis presents the design and implementation of a Distributed Control System DCS built on the wireless communication protocols IEEE 802.15.4, ZigBee. As the nature of the ZigBee mesh network enabled us to decentralize/modularize the plant process complex programming code creating a distributed intelligent control system, actual wireless controlling and monitoring systems based on ZigBee technology and microchip PIC microcontrollers have been established. We conducted our application example and simulators in a real world environment that allowed us to prove that the proposed solution is applicable and efficient. The practical use of ZigBee technology proved to be easy and cheap, it can be applied also to existing systems and not only to new systems with fewer modifications in short time and with a minimum cost and with fairly large transmission range within line of sight both indoor and outdoor compared to the other wireless technologies. The practical results also indicate that the implemented systems achieve the goals of distributing the complex control systems into simple intelligent subsystems with a high great of reliability, significant cost savings in engineering time and materials, including less wiring and smaller control panels, reduced installation times, with improved performance, less rnaertenance and fast replacement of defected components.
